"Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus. Peter exclaimed, 'Rabbi, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.' He said this because he didn’t really know what else to say, for they were all terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, 'This is my dearly loved Son. Listen to him.'" - Mark 9:4-7
Yesterday we spent some time reading the story of the Transfiguration of Christ, and pondering whether the disciples understood that 1) the Jesus they knew was God, and 2) during his transfiguration, they were able to gaze upon the face of God?
But yesterday we just offered the "tip of the iceberg" about what the Transfiguration means to us as Christians. No doubt, as you read the story and have had a day to digest it, you have other questions. Questions such as: why did Jesus only invite Peter, James, and John up on the mountain? Why did Peter want to build three booths or shelters, for Jesus, Elijah and Moses? And, most importantly, how would you have reacted if you had witnessed Jesus’ transfiguration?
Take a few minutes to read through the scripture for today, and try and answer these questions for yourself. What is the importance of the Transfiguration? How does it impact my life and my faith?
