Perhaps They Come

"Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you. Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you.
All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance. 'Look and see, for everyone is coming home! Your sons are coming from distant lands; your little daughters will be carried home. Your eyes will shine, and your heart will thrill with joy, for merchants from around the world will come to you. They will bring you the wealth of many lands.
Vast caravans of camels will converge on you, the camels of Midian and Ephah. The people of Sheba will bring gold and frankincense and will come worshiping the Lord.'" - Isaiah 60:1-6

When a spotlight is focused on you there is no place to hide! You cannot make excuses or defer to someone else because the one who is operating the spotlight has control of the light. Now the spotlight turns on us individually. We are told in verse 1 to “arise and shine” and here in verse 6 we are told to bring gifts and proclaim the praise of the Lord. God has given us the ultimate gift: the one that is priceless. That is His son, who was sent as a baby and grew into a man who died on a cross for us.

So what is God expecting of us, in return? The gifts God expects from us are that we will proclaim his Good News to others who have not heard. Also, He wants us to spend time praising and glorifying Him.

In her poem, Ann Weems imagines the response to the brilliant display of God’s glory in Christ Jesus. Perhaps when the star appeared, she concluded, perhaps the angels all come.

“Perhaps they come, winging through the winds of time
full of expectancy full of hope that this year perhaps
this year, perhaps, the earth will fall to its knees
in a whisper of ‘Peace.’”

This is who the Magi came to find, the Prince of Peace, the one who could bring hope to all of the earth.

Prayer:
Lord God, perhaps the angels have it right, perhaps we should be as full of hope and joy as were the Magi. Help us also to fall to our knees in praise of the Prince of Peace. Amen.
