Transfigured

Transfigurations2.jpg

"Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them." - Mark 9:2-3

The transfiguration of Jesus is often downplayed by Christians as being something interesting, but not very important. But it is important, for it is the second time that God declares in public, that this is His Son (also see Jesus' baptism), as well as it is at this event that we witness, if but for a glimpse, the glory of Christ.

Jesus left the glory of heaven and took on human flesh. This is what Christmas is all about. It is difficult for us to comprehend that Jesus was God in flesh. As Christians we believe that He is the Messiah that the Israelites had waited for. We believe that He died for our sins. We can even partially grasp the concept that Jesus was the Son of God. But we have difficulty understanding that Jesus is God along with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.

As Jesus is transfigured, the disciples who are with Him get a brief glimpse of His glory. When Moses communed with God he had to put a veil over his face when he returned because the glory of God reflected off of his face and the people were terrified of it. For just a brief moment Jesus pulls back the veil of His humanity and His disciples can see who He really is.

Like us, you wonder whether the disciples fully understood that this Jesus, their friend and Rabbi, was God incarnate. When he was transfigured, did they fully understand that they were gazing upon the face of God?

Prayer:
O God, we open our eyes and we see Jesus, transfigured to a beam of light, the light of the world, your light. May your light shine upon us. We open our eyes and we see Jesus, not casting us off, but leading us down, leading us out -to ministry, to people. Your love endures forever. We open our ears and we hear your voice, ‘This is my beloved Son, listen to him!’ and we give you thanks. Amen.
