What Did Jesus Come to Do?
"Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One." - Isaiah 40:21-25
When we read this passage in Isaiah, it almost feels like a quiz. Have you not known? Have you not heard? Known what?! Heard what?! Reading this passage makes me feel like I should know the answer, but do I?
The Israelites should have known the answers. They’ve heard the story of God’s creation of the earth. They know how God brought them out of exile in Egypt. They understand that God has always been with them. But sometimes we forget the things we’re supposed to remember.
What did Jesus come to do? Jesus came to help us understand God in a new way. Jesus came as a teacher to help us understand God better. Jesus lived a life of teaching-–through words and through the way He lived His life. His life was a tutorial to help us remember that God loves us and we ought to love others. Jesus didn’t just tell us that; He showed us how to do it.
